The Yankton Sioux Tribe P.L. 93-638 Higher Education Program is a supplementary initiative designed to provide financial assistance to college students. However, students are urged to explore all other potential sources of financial aid, including the Pell grant (FAFSA).

The deadlines for the YST - Higher Education program are as follows:

FOR OFF-RESERVATION STUDENTS:

  • July 1st - For the upcoming academic year, beginning with the Fall semester.
  • December 1st - For new students who did not enroll in college during the Fall semester.
  • January 1st - For students who received an award for the Fall semester, Fall semester grades and Spring semester class schedule must be submitted to be considered for a second semester award.

FOR ON-RESERVATION STUDENTS:

  • September 1st - For the upcoming academic year, beginning with the Fall semester.
  • January 1st - For new students who did not enroll in college during the Fall semester.
  • January 31st - For students who received an award for the Fall semester, Fall semester grades and Spring semester class schedule must be submitted to be considered for a second semester award.

The chosen higher education institution of the student must be an accredited college as recognized in the National Directory/ Registry of Approval and Accredited Colleges. STUDENTS WHO FAIL TO MEET THE DEADLINE WILL BE ADDED TO THE WAITING LIST.

Applicants must submit a FULLY COMPLETED application along with all necessary documents to the Higher Education Office. The following documents are required for an application to be considered:

  1. Higher Education/Adult Vocational Training application.
  2. Financial Needs Analysis form (found on the last page of the application packet). This form must be filled out by your school's financial aid office and returned to our office. It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure this form is returned to the Higher Education office.
  3. Acceptance letter from the school you are attending.
  4. High school transcripts or GED transcripts or
  5. Transcripts from any previously attended college/University
  6. Certification of Native American Tribal Affiliation
  7. Grades from the previous semester (for returning students)
  8. Current semester class schedule

Applicants are responsible for ensuring all required documents are complete and submitted to the correct offices.

MAINTAIN COPIES OF ALL DOCUMENTS FOR YOUR RECORDS.

The Higher Education program is only able to provide assistance to undergraduate students enrolled in an accredited college. Awards cannot be granted for online classes.
