Overview
The Against The Grain Artistic Scholarship offers financial support and visibility to Asian American students enrolled in college-level programs who are focusing on majors within the visual or performing arts, journalism, or mass communications.
Award
- Amount: $1,000
- Use: To be applied toward tuition and fees
- Disbursement: Scholarship funds will be sent directly to the recipient’s educational institution and credited in the student’s name.
Who May Apply (Eligibility)
Applicants must meet all of the following requirements:
- Be at least 25% Asian and/or Pacific Islander in heritage.
- Be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or lawful permanent resident.
- Be either a high school senior or a college student currently enrolled full-time at an accredited U.S. vocational school, community/junior college, or four-year college/university. Applicants must plan to be a full-time, degree-seeking student (associate, bachelor’s, or master’s) for the upcoming academic year and be majoring in an area of the visual or performing arts, journalism, or mass communications. Examples include film, theatre, fashion, photography, graphic design, dance, music, journalism, and mass communications.
- Demonstrate leadership through community service, extracurricular involvement, or similar activities.
- Hold a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 unweighted scale.
- Note: Immediate family members of Board members are not eligible.
How Recipients Are Chosen
Winners are selected using a points-based evaluation across five categories. The applicant with the highest total score will receive the scholarship. The evaluation areas are:
- Quality of the submission materials (essay and/or artistic portfolio)
- Academic achievement
- Leadership and community service contributions
- Strength of letters of recommendation
- Performance in a phone or in-person committee interview
Recipient Responsibilities
Scholarship recipients will be asked to provide a short thank-you video (approximately 1 minute) for use on the organization’s social media channels.
