Scholarship Sponsored by Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association

Value: $1,000.00
Awards Available: 1
Deadline : May 01, 2026

Introduction
The Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association (JAHSA) is dedicated to advancing health and safety throughout the mining industry. We fund students pursuing mine safety–related education because we believe investing in trained professionals leads to safer workplaces and healthier mining communities. To support this goal, JAHSA offers scholarships to encourage future practitioners in mine safety and health.

Who May Apply
This scholarship is available to individuals preparing for careers in mining or in safety and health roles connected to the mining industry. Awards are offered for applicants in the following groups:
- High school seniors who will be enrolled in a college or university degree program.
- Current undergraduate students enrolled in a college or university degree program.
- College or university graduates who are continuing into a graduate degree program.

Eligibility Details
To be considered, applicants must be enrolled in (or planning to enroll in) an accredited U.S. college or university and be pursuing a degree related to mining, or in health or safety as it relates to the mining industry. Complete submission of the JAHSA Scholarship Application is required. The application is designed for electronic completion but must be printed and mailed in its original, signed form by the deadline. Late or incomplete applications will not be reviewed.

Required Application Materials
Applicants must submit the following items with the original application:
1. Official transcripts showing grades for the last three years of completed education.
2. A financial disclosure statement.
3. A short essay of 200–300 words.
4. A list of extracurricular activities.

Mail the original application and all attachments on or before the published deadline.

Selection Process
A selection committee evaluates applications and chooses recipients based on academic excellence, demonstrated financial need, Grade Point Average (GPA), leadership, and commitment to a mining-related career. The committee works toward consensus on awardees. Successful applicants will be notified by August 1, 2026. (Please also note the separate mailing notification schedule — see “Notification” below.)

Scholarship Award Amount and Disbursement
Individual award amounts will vary depending on available scholarship funding and the merits of each application. All candidates are considered without regard to race, color, sex, age, national origin, religion, or disability. Scholarship funds will be made available for the fall semester of 2026 and will be sent directly to the recipient’s college or university. Funds will be applied to the student’s institutional account and are to be used only for tuition and books.

Notification
Award recipients will receive notification by mail. (The program documentation states recipients will be notified by mail no later than July 15, 2026, and selection committee notifications will be completed by August 1, 2026.)
