Stacey Scholarship Fund
Scholarship Sponsored by National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum
Introduction
The John F. and Anna Lee Stacey Scholarship Fund, established by the Staceys’ will, supports study in the classical fine arts of painting and drawing. The scholarship is open to U.S. citizens — men or women, single or married — without regard to race, creed, or color. Applicants must be between the ages of 18 and 35.
Purpose
Per the terms of the will, the scholarship’s aim is to encourage excellence in study of form, color, drawing, painting, design, and technique when expressed in modes clearly aligned with the classical tradition. Applicants should be dedicated to and skilled in that classical or conservative approach; those who are not committed to this tradition should not apply.
Award Amounts and Payment
Awards vary each year and range from $500 to $5,000 per recipient. The Committee may, at its discretion, distribute awards in quarterly installments.
Eligible Work and Restrictions
The scholarship is explicitly limited to the fine arts of painting and drawing. Related or practical disciplines may be included only as supplementary material. The following types of work are not acceptable for consideration:
- Sculpture
- Collage
- Printmaking
- Anime or animation
- Graphic design
- Illustration
- Fashion design
- Photography
Application Requirements
The online application requires a statement outlining your ambitions and plans and allows submission of up to six examples of paintings/drawings for review. Suggested subject categories (you do not need to include work from every category) include:
1. Painting from life
2. Drawing from the figure (nude)
3. Composition
4. Landscape
5. Other examples you consider relevant
Use of Funds and Reporting
Recipients may use the award to advance their art education along conservative/classical lines as they see fit, though the Committee may offer recommendations. Each awardee must submit a brief quarterly report with digital images of current work and a fuller report at the close of the scholarship period.
Selection and Committee Authority
The Committee will award funds in whole or in part based on a careful review of applicants’ work and personal information. The Committee’s decisions are final. Additionally, the Committee may withhold awards if submitted work does not meet the required standard or is judged to be of inferior quality.
Application Timeline and Notification
Applications are accepted from October 1 through February 1 (of the following year). Applicants will be notified by email in early April. Checks will be mailed to winners in May.
