National Horticultural Foundation Scholarships

The National Horticulture Foundation (NHF) annually offers scholarships to deserving students who are pursuing careers in horticulture or related fields such as landscape professionals, arborists, landscape architecture, and research. These scholarships aim to provide financial assistance to students, enabling them to gain experience, earn post-secondary degrees, and become active contributors and leaders in their respective fields. The application deadline is January 15 each year, and applicants must have a grade point average of 2.5 (C) or higher. Scholarship recipients are allowed to reapply each year.
James S. Davis Memorial Scholarship Fund
Established in memory of James Davis, the founder and owner of Davis Tree Farm from 1978 until his death in May 1995, this scholarship fund offers financial aid ranging from $500 to $3,000. The amount awarded is based on individual applications. James Davis was an active member of the FNGA, contributing significantly through committee and trade show activities.
Eligibility criteria:
- Full-time undergraduate student
- Enrolled in a community college, university, or technical institution within Florida
General Application Fund
This general scholarship is funded by generous donations from industry members to the NHF. The scholarship amount ranges from $500 to $3,000, with the actual amount awarded varying based on individual applications.
Eligibility criteria:
- Full-time graduate student
- Undergraduate students attending a community college, university, or technical institution outside of Florida
Hoskin/McDougald Scholarship Fund
The Bob Hoskins and Sandy McDougald Scholarship was initiated by the Palm Beach Chapter of the Florida Nursery, Growers and Landscape Association (FNGLA) to honor the dedication and years of service Bob Hoskin and Sandy McDougald contributed to the horticultural industry. The fund is generously supported by numerous industry members to educate the next generation of professionals.
Eligibility criteria:
Applicants must have resided in one of the following counties for at least one year: Palm Beach, Broward, Okeechobee, Martin, St. Lucie, or Indian River County.
FNGLA NE Chapter Scholarship "Billy Barwald Memorial Scholarship"
The Billy Barwald Scholarship was established in 2016 by the Northeast Chapter of the FNGLA to honor Billy’s dedication and years of service in the horticultural industry. Billy was the founder of Barwald Landscaping and the Flying Dragon Citrus Nursery. He was also the third Landscape Architect registered in Florida and a charter member of the FNGLA. The scholarship awards $2500 to one student per year.
Eligibility criteria:
- Residency in one of the following counties: St. Johns, Duval, Clay, Nassau, or Baker County
- Intention to attend a college in Florida
Taking Root Scholarship - Arborjet | Ecologel
The Taking Root Scholarship is available to students enrolled in accredited arboriculture or horticulture programs. It seeks to support students with a passion for studying science and technology to advance the industry, particularly in areas such as plant pathology, entomology, chemistry related to invasive insect & disease management, arboriculture, urban forestry, horticulture, and landscape architecture. The scholarship awards $2500 to one student per year.
Eligibility criteria:
- Full-time undergraduate student
- Interest in pursuing a career in arboriculture or plant health care
