Walentas Scholars Program

Overview This award supports first-generation, college-bound students who demonstrate outstanding achievement and strong promise in leadership, academic excellence, and committed civic engagement. Eligibility and Purpose The scholarship is intended for students who will be the first in their families to attend college. Selection is based on evidence of leadership, scholastic distinction, and active citizenship. Nomination and Submission Deadlines - Jefferson and Walentas Scholarship materials (both counselor and nominee submissions) are due December 1, 2025. - Submissions for the Domestic and International At-Large regions must be received by November 15, 2025. All deadline dates will be sent to nominators and nominees via email. If you are unsure about the due date for your specific materials, please contact us for clarification. Scholarship Coverage Yes — this is a full four-year award. The scholarship covers tuition, room and board, books, and other miscellaneous expenses for eight semesters of full-time enrollment at the University of Virginia. Supports for Walentas Scholars Walentas recipients receive the same programmatic benefits available to Jefferson Scholars, plus additions tailored for first-generation students. Walentas Scholars participate in a Scholar Summit prior to their first year to help with the transition to college and to begin forming a peer community. They also have access to a dedicated program director and Foundation staff throughout their time at UVA. In addition, University of Virginia resources for first-generation students remain available to support their academic and personal success.
