Program Overview
The Mission Viejo Activities Committee (MVAC) offers a volunteer scholarship to recognize graduating high school seniors who demonstrate outstanding character and a strong commitment to community service. MVAC administers the program and selects recipients without regard to race, ethnicity, religion, or gender. Five scholarships are awarded each year, each valued at more than $1,000, with community service being the primary consideration.
Eligibility
To be considered, applicants must:
- Be a current high school senior residing in the geographic boundaries of the Saddleback Valley Unified School District (SVUSD) or Capistrano Valley Unified School District (CVUSD).
- Have completed at least 150 hours of volunteer service during high school (grades 9–12), with a minimum of 25 of those hours performed within the City of Mission Viejo.
- Intend to enroll full-time in an accredited U.S. two-year or four-year college/university, or an accredited/certified technical or trade program, beginning the fall semester following high school graduation.
- Be able to provide documentation showing a steady record of community service throughout high school.
Required Documentation and Verification
- Complete the online application in full, including the required essay describing your volunteer experiences.
- Provide contact information for two references from organizations listed in your application who can verify the volunteer activities you claim.
- MVAC will verify community service hours and other information provided. Falsification or omission of required information will result in disqualification.
- All application materials are treated as confidential and are reviewed only by the Scholarship Committee.
Application Procedure & Deadline
- Submit the entire application online by March 15th (completed submissions must be received by MVAC by this date).
- We recommend printing a copy of each page of your application for your records before submitting.
- Note: The online form will not automatically capture personal details (such as name and email) unless you enter them.
Selection Process
Scholarship recipients are chosen based on:
- Total volunteer service hours
- Demonstrated leadership
- Quality of the volunteerism essay
- Personal goals and future aspirations
- References provided
- Performance in an in-person interview
Awards and Disbursement
- The Scholarship Committee will recommend awardees to the MVAC Executive Board; payments are authorized by the Executive Board and processed by MVAC office staff.
- Scholarship funds are paid in a single installment in August. Checks are issued payable to both the student and the school and must be endorsed by both parties.
- Scholarship funds may be used for any school-related expenses (tuition, books, room and board, supplies, etc.).
- Recipients will be required to provide their Social Security number for tax reporting purposes.
Renewal and Program Changes
- MVAC scholarships are not renewable.
- MVAC reserves the right to change the rules, procedures, or terminate the scholarship program at any time.
