IAM Scholarships

Overview
This annual scholarship program is available to International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) members and their children residing in the United States and Canada. The awards are funded solely from the IAM Scholarship Fund, which was created by delegates at the 1960 IAM Grand Lodge Convention. Details, eligibility rules, and application procedures are set forth in this Announcement.
The competition
A Selection Committee evaluates eligible applicants and awards scholarships that support either pursuit of a bachelor’s degree or completion of a two-year vocational/technical certification program.
Award amounts and duration
- IAM members: $2,000 per academic year. Awards are made for a defined period of one to four years to assist a member in obtaining a bachelor’s degree or a two-year vocational/technical certification.
- Children of IAM members:
- College (Bachelor’s degree): $1,000 per academic year. These awards may be renewed annually until a bachelor’s degree is earned, up to a maximum of four years.
- Vocational/Technical school: $2,000 per academic year, renewable until certification is achieved, up to a maximum of two years.
Who is eligible
An applicant must be one of the following:
- an active IAM member; or
- the son, daughter, stepchild, or legally adopted child of an active or retired IAM member.
Requirements for IAM member applicants
- Must have maintained continuous “good-standing” membership for two years through the competition closing date.
- May apply when entering postsecondary education as a freshman or as a student with prior college credit.
- May enroll as a full-time or part-time student.
- Unsuccessful applicants may reapply in subsequent years.
Requirements for applicants who are children of members
- At least one parent must be an active or retired IAM member in continuous good standing for two years through the competition closing date.
- A child whose parent died after the child began high school is eligible provided the parent had two years of continuous good-standing membership at the time of death.
- “Continuous good-standing membership” means the member paid monthly dues without interruption by withdrawal cards.
- Must be scheduled to graduate high school in the winter or by the end of the spring of the current school year.
- Must intend to enroll full time in a regular college or vocational/technical program and maintain qualifying academic standards.
Who is not eligible
The following applicants are ineligible:
- Those who do not plan to pursue a bachelor’s degree or vocational/technical certification without interruption.
- Members’ children who are already attending or who previously attended college or vocational/technical school.
- Children of members employed on the payroll of the International.
- Graduate students.
- Applicants who do not intend to enroll in an accredited college or vocational/technical institution.
