Timeline
- Online applications are open each year from Nov 1 through Feb 1.
- Award notifications are sent by email in early April. (Please check your SPAM/Junk folder.) Update: because of these unprecedented times, notification emails will be sent at the end of April.
- Scholarship recipient names are published on bigy.com in early May. Update: the recipient list will now be posted mid to late May.
Who may apply
- The scholarship is available to graduating high school seniors, undergraduate students and graduate students.
- Employees of Big Y, their dependents, customers and customers’ dependents are encouraged to apply.
- Applicants must either live in Massachusetts or Connecticut, or be enrolled at a school located in Massachusetts or Connecticut. NOTE: Big Y employees are eligible to apply regardless of where they live.
- Students who have previously received a Big Y scholarship are not eligible to submit another application.
How to submit an application
- Go to the Big Y scholarship page at www.bigy.com between Nov 1 and Feb 1 and follow the online application link. That page will have the most current instructions and requirements.
- Only online submissions are accepted. Paper applications will not be considered.
- Applications submitted after Feb 1 or those left incomplete by that deadline will be disqualified.
- Warning: Older paper application forms that appear on third‑party websites are not valid and will not be accepted.
Required supporting materials
- Academic transcripts: unofficial copies are acceptable (photos, PDFs, scans).
- Two letters of recommendation are required. At least one must come from a teacher or college professor. High school seniors and college freshmen may submit copies of letters previously written for college admissions.
- Recommendation letters can be uploaded on your behalf by a third party (for example, school staff). Use the online application’s instructions to request recommendations from teachers or professors.
- If you never took College Board exams (SAT/ACT) or it has been more than three years since you took them, you may still complete the application without test scores.
- A personal résumé or fact sheet listing activities, honors, awards, community service, leadership roles and class rank (if applicable).
Information for high schools, colleges and universities
- Each fall, scholarship packets (including a poster and letter) are mailed to schools located in Massachusetts and Connecticut.
