Program overview
The J. Harold and Mabel Hamil Memorial Scholarship awards annual college scholarships to graduating high school seniors in honor of J. Harold and Mabel Hamil. The award is intended for students who have demonstrated strong achievement and involvement in one or more of these areas: English/Journalism, Debate/Public Speaking, Political Science, and/or Community Involvement, and who plan to continue their education at a college or university.
Eligibility
To be considered, applicants must be graduating seniors from one of the following Northland high schools:
- North Kansas City High School
- Oak Park High School
- Winnetonka High School
- Park Hill High School
- Park Hill South High School
- Platte Co. RIII High School
- Staley High School
- St. Piux X High School
Application requirements
- Two letters of recommendation:
- One from a current or former high school teacher or counselor.
- One from a non-relative who can speak to the applicant’s character and accomplishments.
- Most recent high school transcript.

Supplemental questions (to be answered as part of the application)
1. Describe your involvement and activities in English/Journalism (for example: yearbook, school newspaper, writing projects, etc.).
2. Describe your participation and experience in Debate/Public Speaking or other oral communication activities.
3. Describe your engagement in Political Science–related activities (for example: student government or civic involvement).
4. Upload one (1) letter of recommendation from a current or former high school teacher or counselor.
5. Upload one (1) letter of recommendation from someone who knows you outside of school.
